How Much Does A Flood Risk Assessment Cost?

Flood Risk Assessments vary in cost depending on a number of factors, primarily what work is included. The lowest cost option available is a 'Level 1 Flood Risk Assessment', which will involve a basic screening of the site analysing all available data from the Environment Agency, Local Planning Authority and any other flood risk assessments that may have been carried out in the area. A Level 2 Flood Risk Assessment will cost a little more and will involve a qualitative assessment of all the potential flood risks to the site and resulting from development. To save money we offer both levels 1 & 2 as part of a single Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment. Where detailed flood level information is not available for an area or more information is needed to be able to determine the flood risk at a site, a more costly Level 3 Detailed Flood Risk Assessment will be required.

Level 1 Flood Risk Assessment Cost

Screening Study - The lowest cost option available is what is often called a 'Level 1 Flood Risk Assessment' which will involve a basic screening of the site analysing all available data from the Environment Agency, Local Planning Authority and any other flood risk assessments that may have been carried out in the area. This screening assessment will inform you as to whether a more detailed assessment is necessary, or it may show that none is needed. It can, therefore, save you money by potentially avoiding the need to carry out a more detailed flood risk assessment.

This basic, lower cost flood risk assessment option is recommended for smaller sites and sites in areas less susceptible to flooding but can also be helpful as a way of determining the scope of any additional flood risk assessments on larger sites in higher risk areas.

Level 2 Flood Risk Assessment Cost

Scoping Study - A Level 2 Flood Risk Assessment will cost a little more and will involve a qualitative assessment of all the potential flood risks to the site and resulting from development. This scoping study will involve a more in-depth appraisal of the potential sources of flooding, historical flooding events and drainage issues in the area and will provide a more site-specific flood risk assessment. Any available topographical surveys will be assessed to determine the effect of flooding on the site by comparing predicted flood levels with the existing and proposed ground levels on the site.

It may be necessary to choose this option on larger sites and sites in areas more susceptible to flooding where a screening study would not be sufficient. To save cost, our Preliminary Flood Risk Assessments cover both Level 1 and Level 2 Flood Risk Assessments in a single report and can be adapted to the specific project and site.

Level 3 Detailed Flood Risk Assessment Cost

Detailed Study - Where detailed food level information is not available for an area or more information is needed to be able to determine the flood risk at a site, a Level 3 Flood Risk Assessment, also called a Detailed Flood Risk Assessment, will be required. This detailed study may include hydrological and hydraulic modelling and a full drainage strategy using infiltration testing etc.

With the incorporation of flood modelling and detailed quantitative analysis, this will be a more expensive option and only likely to be required on very large sites or sites deemed to be at high risk of flooding based previous assessments or Environment Agency data.
